Hemochromatosis

Hemochromatosis, is a hereditary disease characterized by improper processing by the body of dietary iron, which causes iron to accumulate in a number of body tissues. Eventually the excess of iron may cause organ dysfunction.

signs and symptoms

Haemochromatosis is notoriously alusive, that is, it presents with symptoms that are often initially attributed to other diseases.

symptoms of hemochromatosis - too much iron in blood:
  • malaise - discomfort, uneasiness, or indisposition, often indicative of infection.
  • liver cirrhosis and hepatitis - hardening and enlargment of the liver.
  • insulin resistance - type II diabetes.
  • erectile dysfunction and hypogonadism - dysfunction of penile erection and gonad secretion
  • congestive heart failure
  • arrhythmias - irregular heart beet
  • pericarditis - inflammation of the pericardium with symptoms that may include precordial pain and tenderness, dry cough, dyspnea, and palpitations.
  • arthritis of the hands, knees and shoulders
  • dysfunction of certain endocrine organs:
    • pancrease
    • adrenals
    • parathyroid
    • pituitary
    • testes or ovary
  • a darkish colour to the skin
